The most significant difference between symmetric and asymmetrical encryption is symmetrical encryption uses one key to encrypt and decrypt as opposed to asymmetrical encryption which utilizes 2 keys, one for encryption and the other for decryption. Both types of encryptions are used today, and each has their advantages and disadvantages, however its important to note that Symmetrical encryption is considered an older form of encrypting and asymmetrical encryption is newer. Symmetrical encryption which uses one key for both encryption and decryption is more commonly used for data transfers. This is due to symmetrical encryption being significantly faster resulting in quicker encrypted data transfers. Some commonly used symmetric encryption algorithms include AES-128, AES-192, and AES-256.
